Being v Doing, how do we need to "be" as leaders right now. Consider where you put your attention, how you show up and the impact you have in work & life. Reflect on what "being" better looks like as a leader. Bite size reflections to enable you to hone how you want to be as a leader, increase your impact and improve the relationships, teams and systems around you. Hosted by leadership team coach Annabel Graham, with or without others. Find out more at www.successfultraining.co.uk
In this episode we shall continue to connect with our purpose and intent, and think about who we are and what we do. And alongside our values and beliefs, in this episode we will start to focus the lens on capabilities – the strengths, skills and knowledge that contribute to who we are and how we show up. Because we all have strengths, lots of them, even if sometimes we feel really inadequate.
So I’m also going to talk about this in 3 sections:
- Understanding what strengths are and how we recognise them? - I'll explain how we develop strengths, from the brain up to adding skill and capability
- Explore what gets in the way of us focusing on strengths, and can contribute to our feelings of inadequacy and lack of confidence: Our Inner Critic and Limiting Beliefs, Imposter Phenomenon and societal bias
- Look at a practical exercise you can do to identify your strengths, skills and capabilities and what you may need to focus on to be the leader/person you want to be. See the questions for this below.

Now it’s over to you. I want you to grab a note book, tablet & pen, your phone – whatever is at hand. And start to think about the questions I’m going too ask you. if you don’t have time now – then come back to them, pause the podcast, or look for the list in the show notes. Start to shape the future- think of it as “being on team me”
- What are you good at- that you enjoy and gives you energy ? list these and rate them 1-10 on how much like them & how effective you are.
- What are you good at that you don’t enjoy, but can do anyway? Do the same with these
- What are you ok at could be brushed up and improved? Again rank and rate – what similarities are there. What do you want to improve, and what are you happy to leave as it is.
- How do these skills and knowledge match your identity and help you achieve your purpose? Which do which don’t?
- What have you yet to learn that you aren't admitting, that will help you and support your purpose?
Come on – hold up the mirror
- What strengths/skills are you overusing, or using in the wrong place
When you’ve done this, go ask someone close to you at work, who supports you, who you like and admire, and discuss this with them. What do they agree with, what do they see you don’t? From that look at.
- What development needs do you have that are holding you back and impacting your progress?
- What are the gaps between your strengths & skills & those required by the role or person you want to be?
Once you have those, think about:
- How will you move forward with these development areas?
- Who do you need to ask for help?
And be realistic, do the bits you want & need to do. Don’t create a massive list that is too daunting. Gravitate to the ones that will make the biggest difference, and give you the most energy, and set your intention for what is doable. Remember – you have a whole lifetime to make this happen – it doesn’t all have to be tomorrow.
