In this episode we explore our purpose and identity. We start to question who we are, what we stand for, and wrestle with who and how we want to be as leaders.
Our purpose, why we are here is the bit that we often need to define, because as humans we can feel that we are defined by what we do; our accomplishments, our achievements buy what we put on social media and people like because it validates us, it’s what our organisations measure.
But that isn't who we are. It's just transient; what we do changes with roles, it changes with what we do during the day. It isn't who we are.
What we are remains. It's the underlying factor, it's why we're going about it. It's what fulfils us.
That means we need to step back, slow down and tune in to ourselves. Notice how we are being, what helps us, what gets in the way, and truly be present in the moment.
That mean we may notice and have to accept things we don’t like the look of (and that could be us). And that’s ok – to be able to find our purpose, understand how and what we want to be, we need to accept what is first. Just as it is. Only then can we move towards better, what ever that may be for us.
Think through the following questions. Some of them might not come easily and that's okay just sit with them and work on them at your own pace.
- What are you passionate about, that gets you out of bed in the morning enthused?
- what do you want to achieve? Why are you doing it and what will it give you?
- How do you want to show up and be in your life?
- What are you aiming for?
- What do you want to be known for and what will people remember you for?
- what do you see your role as? ( this could be at home, at work, with your family).
- What role do others see your role as being? Are these in alignment, and if not, what do you need to tell people (with facts, or stories) to get them to see you as you see yourself?
In future episodes we will explore values, our strengths & capabilities, behaviour and the environment we live and work in. All these effect how we are. So check out the questions I pose at the end of each episode in the notes to explore how you want to be further.
